The Akwa Ibom State Council of National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has commended the member representing Abak State Constituency in Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and chairman, House Committee on Health, Hon. Udeme Otong, for sponsorship of people-oriented bills and motions.
The professional body gave the lawmaker a pat on the back, Friday, when they paid him a thank you visit to appreciate him for gracing the 2021 Nurses week and for the people-oriented bills and motions he sponsored on the floor of the House.
In his message of gratitude, the state chairman of NANNM, Comrade Emem David, particularly appreciated Otong, aformer two-term chairman of NANNM, for sponsoring theCollege of Nursing Sciences and Midwifery Bill.
David specially commended the support enjoyed from Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, the speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly during the 2021 NANNM week.
Speaking further, David hinted that the State Council of NANNM will soon embark on ceremonial send forth of nurses that had retired from service from 2012 till date, noting that there will be Nurses week for 2022.
He also reiterated the need for government to look into the gap caused by shortage of staff in health care facilities in the state, stressing that most facilities are without nurses due to the fact that many nurses have retired from service without replacement or employment of new nurses by the government.
He also emphasized the need to give nurses in the stateopportunities to man offices that concern health care management.
In his response, the chairman House Committee on Healthcommended the efforts of Comrade Emem David-led administration for their team work and cooperation which has moved the Association to the next level.
The lawmaker also took time to address all issues and request brought to him by the executive members of NANNM and admonished them to continue to tackle healthcare services with all amount of dedication and commitment, noting that their good work will always speak for them tomorrow.
Otong also took them down memory lane when he was the chairman of NANNM, during which he performed creditably well by speaking for the benefit of all, maintaining that his good works has brought him this far.
He urged them to continue to support the succession plan of Gov Udom Gabriel Emmanuel because he has impacted massively in the health sector.
Otong also restated his unalloyed support to the nurses to ensure that their interests are protected in all circumstances.
