By Timothy EkpoUYOAkwa Ibom deputy governor has given the assurance that government would take proactive measures to address the menace of flood in the State with a view to safeguarding lives and property.Eyakenyi, who spoke in her capacity as the chairman, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), said the assurance followed the havoc caused by recent downpour which led to flooding in parts of the State.She noted that relevant government agencies were working round the clock to mitigate the effects of the disaster and ameliorate the suffering of residents, urging residents of the State to cooperate with government by desilting drainages in their neighbourhoods and to desist from clogging them with wastes.The deputy governor said when government received the flood prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET), which listed Akwa Ibom among the endangered states, government swung into action by ordering massive desilting of drainages, and directed the monthly environmental sanitation with full restriction of movement to enable residents dedicate that time to cleaning their surroundings.She explained that to provide immediate succour to the affected areas, government had to deploy most of the construction contractors in the State to drain out the flood water, assuring that other measures were being adopted to address the menace of flooding in the State.“We have identified flooded and flood prone areas in the state. SEMA, the Ministry of Environment, some other MDAs and major contractors were quickly deployed by government to intervene. They jointly identified the areas and their intervention has reduced the magnitude of damage. A proper report has also been submitted to me.“As we received the flood prediction by NiMET, the governor swung into action. This is why you've been witnessing massive desilting of drainages in the state capital and other parts of the State. He has also approved full restriction of movement during the monthly environmental sanitation, as a way of encouraging residents to take the time and tidy up their neighbourhoods.“We must support government in this endeavour by being environment- friendly in our practices. Dumping of wastes in gutters around our neighbourhood can only worsen the situation. We can't stop rainfall but we can mitigate its effects on our environment,” she appealed.Eyakenyi stated that government was on top of the situation to check re-occurrence, and sympatised with victims of July 9, 2026 downpour.
