It was a fascinating day at Community Secondary Commercial School, Ikot Ekpeyak, Ikono, Uyo as the students showcased their sports prowess and adroitness at the annual Inter – house Sports Competition / Talent Hunts held in the school recently.
Speaking at the occasion, the chairman of State Secondary Education Board, Dr. Ekaette Ebong Okon, commended the principal of the school, Mr. OduduAbasi Akpan, the chairman of the Inter – house Sports planning committee, Obonganwan Udeme Okon Sam, all the members of the planning committee, games masters/ mistresses and all the teachers of the school for a well planned and executed sports Meet and for training the students not only in academics but also in sports and urged them to continue in their good works.
She further called on all the principals and teachers to give total training to their students by training them in sports so as to harvest sports talents and train them as some of the students will make their living from sports, lauding the performance of the students of the state who represented Akwa Ibom State in the National Maltina Schools Sports Competition in Abuja and came second in the country with seven gold medalists set to represent Nigeria in China later in the year.
The board boss extended her gratitude to the parents for equipping their children for the sports Meet. Okon urged the chieftains and members of the community to desist from encroaching into the school land, calling on the well meaning indigenes to emulate the kind gesture of the Umanah’s family who singlehandedly built a multipurpose hall in the school by providing an Introductory Technology Block and other facilities that will ease teaching and learning in the school.
Earlier in his address, the principal of the school Mr OduduAbasi Akpan, welcomed all the guests to the sports competition, assuring all that they would witness a healthy competition in both track and field events among six houses namely: Red House, Yellow House, Sky Blue House, Purple House, Orange House and Lemon Hous. Speaking on the importance of sports to school life, Akpan said it inculcates the spirit of healthy competition amongst students, teaches discipline, focus, dedication, hard work, commitment and teamwork, instills values that help students to cruise through life with honesty and responsibility for themselves and others,as well as making them agile and fit, improving their physical health and enhancing their mental health.
Akpan added that the school is growing from strength to strength both in curricular and co – curricular activities as the school participated in a school debate recently organized by Bold Speakers Concept and came out second in the competition, Maltina Schools Sports Competition, among others.
Speaking on the needs of the school, he mentioned that the school needs a set of parade band, a foot ball net, a volleyball pitch, a basketball court, a table tennis set and kits conveniences for the students and at least, a four classroom block.
He lauded the effort and magnanimity of the chairman of the Inter-house Sports Competition, Obonganwan Udeme Okon Sam, one of the vice principals of the school for donating three trophies, hiring the brass band for the sports meet and other financial and moral support that she has given not just for the success of the Inter-House Sports Competition, but also for the success of his administration.
In the competition, Lemon House came first, Sky blue House came second while Yellow House came third.
High points of the event were beauty contest, cultural dance, presentation of awards of excellence by the school and Obonganwan Udeme Okon Sam to the chairman of the board, Dr. Ekaette Ebong Okon; Board Member 2, Ofonmbuk Ukim;the permanent secretary, Mr Asuquo Selong Edem; and the director, School Services, Mrs Janet Edeghe.
