CALABAR

The Cross River Police Dragon Squad (Anti-Crime and Kidnapping Squad, ACKS) at the weekend said it halted a 400-level male University of Calabar (UNICAL) student, Effiong Kingsley Paul, from committing suicide.

The 400-level Philosophy student, who the police claimed was on a suicide mission, climbed the about one hundred feet stadium flush lights pole threatening to jump off should anyone attempt to stop him.

The UNICAL student, who hails from Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom, upon being rescued by the police, claimed his intention was to draw government attention to the sorry state of the stadium facility.

Among the facilities which he actually emphasized as stated by the Police was the basket ball court, which he was in love with.

The attempt to jump off the flush light created a scene that drew attention of hundreds of Calabar residents out from theirnearby offices and passersby, who came pleading with the UNICAL student not to jump off the pole of the flush light.

Worried by the development, men of the police Dragon Squad swung into action and followed up the student, who was already at the top of the high stadium flush light causing him to come down from the pole.

The police public relations officer (PPRO), DSP Irene Ugbo, stated, “It was a suicide attempt. I think he just told us that it was his own way of launching a protest against state government to revive sporting facilities at the U. J. EsueneStadium.

According to Ugbo, “From what we gather, he is a sports lover and his thinking is that government should rise up to the occasion and rehabilitate the sporting facilities at the stadium.”

The head of police anti-crime and kidnapping squad otherwise known as Dragon Squad, DSP Abdulhameed Awordi, stated that the police were still trying to dig into what prompted the young man to climb the high stadium flush lights pole threatening to jump off.

The Dragon Squad boss maintained, “We are likely going to take him to the psychiatric hospital for medical examination to find out if his mental health is stable or he is on hard drugsor in good health.
