The Akwa Ibom government has promised that the ongoing renovation and re-equipping of the Mary Slessor General Hospital, Itu Local Government Area, would be completed and commissioned before May 2023.

This commitment was revealed by the commissioner for health, Professor Augustine Vincent Umoh, when he led the management of the ministry on an inspection of the ongoing project recently.

Umoh reiterated the position of the present administration to complete every project initiated before the expiration of the tenure by May 2023.

He stressed that although the Emmanuel-led administration had 12 months to go, he was still intended on giving life-touching projects to the Akwa Ibom people and would only stop by May next year.

The commissioner noted with delight that the administration had so far transformed at least one secondary health facility in each federal constituency and was on a second round of extending its midas touch to strategic hospitals across the state.

He pointed out that the relevance of the Mary Slessor General Hospital could not be down played in the history and that there was need to preserve such a symbolic facility for posterity.

Umoh, who however acknowledged the peculiar topography of the area, explained that the concerns informed the engagement of the contractor who he believed would bring his reputed professional expertise to bare.

He said that he was so far satisfied with what the contractor had done but still urged him to employ his good judgment in overcoming the typical terrain and delivering a hospital which would be fully functional for the service of humanity.
