The member for Etinan/ Nsit Ibom/ Nsit Ubium Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has lauded the peace efforts of former President of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Jonathan in Africa. Contributing to the debate on a matter of urgent public importance; “On the need to address the creeping resurgence of military coups in the West African subregion” brought by Rep. Julius Ihonvbere on floor of the House, Wednesday, Mr Onofiok Luke stated that since Africa has seen the benefit of democracy globally, it was right to rise and condemn any action truncating democracy in the continent.
He recalled the role Jonathan played in 2015 when as an incumbent, conceded defeat to his opponent in the Presidential election, an action, he described, “as a panacea for peace.”
Luke applauded the role Nigeria continues to play in the conservation and stabilization of Africa’s democracy.
He also commended Jonathan with the support of President Muhammadu Buhari in ensuring democratic stability in the West African subregion.
The lawmaker stated that since Nigeria was in the leadership of the West African subregion, the country should use that power to continue to ensure democratic stability within the region and resist any of such military or forceful disruption of democratic rule.
He said that military coups increase the indices of economic sanctions and world distrust in business spheres for African countries and would lead to further impoverishment of the people.
