The member representing Etinan /Nsit Ibom /Nsit UbiumFederal Constituency in the House of Representatives, MrOnofiok Luke, has lamented the increase in adulterated fuel sold in Nigeria.
He stated this while contributing to the debate on a matter of urgent public importance on the need to investigate the importation, procurement, release and sale of adulterated fuel into the country considering its devastating effects on Nigerians brought before the House by Alhaji Mohammed Mongunoduring plenary on Thursday.
According to Luke; “Nigeria, as a whole, has been faced with so many challenges in the different sectors of the economy which have made life difficult, even in accessing healthcare, even in education, even in security and today because of adulterated fuel we are adding additional hardship to Nigerians.
“The things that Nigerians should access freely without any challenges are becoming an issue, are becoming a big burden on them. One of the things we must do to bring back the confidence of Nigerians in government and most especially the legislature is the position we must take in this matter.”
He called for a decisive decision by the House to ensure erring parties are held accountable so that Nigerians can know they have a voice in governance.
Luke also called for the sanctioning of the regulatory agencies as the NNPC has already acknowledged sabotage.
He further stated that those saddled with the responsibility of inspecting the product at the point of loading and offloading should check adulteration of the product.
The lawmaker said the present situation called for government to support agencies for the establishment of modular refineries and rehabilitation of existing refineries.
He added that the establishment and licensing of modular refineries will aid in refining crude oil for use by Nigerians.
