The Akwa Ibom governor has re-affirmed the commitment of his administration toward entrepreneurial growth and development of the state, particularly the youth sector.
Pastor Umo Eno, who stated this, Friday, during the flag-off of training programmes at the Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centre (DASAC), Ikot Ada Idem, Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, maintained that skills acquisition was the surest way for sustainable growth and “the passport to a flight away from poverty and unemployment to a safe landing of personal development.”
Governor Eno, who spoke through the commissioner for education, Mrs Idongesit Etiebet, observed, “This Centre and its mission ties into the very core or foundation of our ARISE Agenda, which in the main is to produce a workforce that is ready and prepared to apply itself to the demands and expectations of the ICT and skills development in line with the SDG goals of poverty reduction and human capital development.”
He further stated, “It is heartwarming to note that DASAC is the largest vocational facility in Nigeria that offers practical courses for private companies, government institutions and individuals seeking professional skills for employment or entrepreneurship.”
Announcing a monthly stipend of N20,000 to the pioneer students of the Centre, the governor expressed optimism that the trainees will set the standard that will inspire future students of the Centre.
Eno, who commended the immediate past governor of the state, Mr Udom Emmanuel, for “conceptualising the Centre,” said the state government had already paid for the trainings of the 200 pioneer students of the Institution.
While congratulating the governing council, management, staff and students of the Centre for the historic event, the governor expressed hope that the trainees will avail themselves of the opportunity offered them “and come out later to face the world of opportunity with verve and passion.”
Earlier in his welcome speech, the chairman, Governing Council of DASAC, Mr Churchill Udo, commended governor Umo Eno for his huge investment in the education sector of the state, pointing out that the 200 trainees at the Centre were fully sponsored by the state government.
Udo who lauded the governor for his unwavering efforts at upgrading the intellectual capacities of the Akwa Ibom people, particularly through the current exposure of the indigent students to the international learning environment and standard, as well as provision of physical infrastructure in the public schools across the state, among other innovations, said the selection of the trainees and trainers were transparently conducted without any interference from stakeholders, advising the trainees to make judicious use of the opportunity presented to them by the state government.
The rector of the Institution, Professor Enoidem Usoro, who thanked Gov Umo Eno for fulfilling the promise made to the Centre, described the flagoff ceremony for commencement of training programmes at DASAC as the fulfillment of that promise.
