Akwa Ibom State Government is gearing efforts toward sending climate heroes from the state to the 2022 Climate Change Conference in Egypt.
The government action which is to be carried out in collaboration with Mfon Edet Educational Foundation is aimed at raising youth advocates on climate change who will automatically become climate heroes for Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria and the world at large.
The commissioner for environment and solid minerals, Sir Charles Udoh, made this known during the Environmental Awareness Campaign for schools in the state, with the theme Promoting Climate Actions, Building Climate Heroes.
Schools visited for the campaign included: Government Primary School, Afaha Offot in Uyo Local Government Area,and Community Secondary Commercial School, Ibiaku Itam in Itu Local Government.
Represented by the director of climate change and awareness, Mrs Ini Umoh Udoh, said that the activity would be a continuous exercise featuring essay writing and quiz competitions for students and pupils to produce climate heroes.
“For those of us who want to become climate heroes, pleasenote that this activity is not ending here today, it is going to be a continuous exercise. We are going to have essay writing and quiz competitions where climate heroes will be produced,” the commissioner stated.
“So, those of you who are interested in becoming climate heroes should make themselves available. As I earlier said, we want to have advocates that will go for the next Conference for Climate Change Party in Egypt”, he emphasized.
He urged the pupils and students from the schools to cultivate the habit of deposing waste properly by segregating them into organic waste, paper waste, and bottle waste, noting that the students and pupils should be agent of change.
The environment and solid minerals boss, explained that climate change was real and it was the change in a climatic condition of a place and cited the just-concluded 2021Climate Change Conference party in United Kingdom which youths were strong advocates for climate change actions and how its effect can be minimized
He said that the aim of sensitization was to catch them young as climate heroes in the area of waste management and thanked both schools for providing litters bin for students and pupils and inculcating in them good characters on how waste materials could be deposed.
Talks on Environmental Awareness were presented by the director of climate change and awareness, Mrs Ini Umoh, the CEO Mfon Edet Educational Foundation, Mrs. Mfon Edet and one of the representatives of Elizabeth Kallstron Clean Air for Africa, Mrs Igwe Chioma.
Climate change items were presented to the schools including: books on climate change actions manual, labels for waste segregation bin, waste baskets/buckets, waste bags and resource materials on pollution.
In their remarks, the principal of Community Secondary Commercial School, Ibiaku Itam, Mr. Joesph Bassey,represented by vice principal Administration and the headmistress of Government Primary School Afaha Offot, represented by Mrs. Elizabeth Okpon, appreciated the commissioner and the foundation for choosing their schools for the sensitization and promised to make good use of the environmental materials given to them.
