The Akwa Ibom State University on Thursday, June 2, 2022,organized an orientation exercise for the newly admitted students of the institution.

The exercise took place simultaneously in both campuses atIkot Akpaden and Obio Akpa and was aimed at intimating the freshmen on the nitty gritty of the university.

Speaking at the event, the vice chancellor, Professor Nse Essien, stated that the university under his watch would not compromise with any misquided student who indulges in anti-social behaviours such as cultism, stealing, examination malpractice as well as any act capable of bringing the long earned reputation of the institution into disrepute.

He advised students to adhere to the rules and regulations of the university, adding that it is important for them to stay out of trouble at all times.

The university boss charged the freshmen to prepare themselves to be a change agent; gain requisite knowledge, think critically, get empowered and learn skills that would help them to make the world a better place for all.

He maintained that the university has secured full accreditation for all the 41 academic programmes from National Universities Commission (NUC) and relevant professional bodies and urged the students to take their studies seriously so as to come out with flying colours upon graduation.

The vice chancellor promised his administration’s readiness to provide good learning environment for the overall benefits of the students and called on them to use the opportunity given to them to develop a winning attitude, set goals for themselves, study hard and excel in their different fields of endeavour.

Essien commended the Akwa Ibom State government for enhancing infrastructural development in the university, which, according to him, has given the institution a new look.

He sued for synergy between the management and students, pointing out that this would make the university to achieve its set goals.

He reassured the students of maximum security and urged them to restrict their movement to avoid being victim(s) of any casualties.

Also speaking, the registrar of the university and secretary to the senate, Dr. Ebi Eno-Ibanga, stressed that she always kept an open door to attain to anybody that needs her assistance, pointing out that she is ready to accommodate them as a mother.

She appealed to the students to remain focused and do away with any activities that would bring stigma to their families, adding that the acquisition of a degree from the university at the end of their studies would be based on character and learning.

The orientation exercise featured lectures on use of library, time management, medical advice, calculation of CGPA, university rules and regulations, amongst others, by seasoned lecturers inthe university.

Some of the new students who spoke with The Pioneerexpressed happiness for the opportunity provided by the institution, positing that the high level of discipline, qualified staff, infrastructural developments seen in the school have stood the institution out as a citadel of learning.

Bright Samuel of the Department of Accounting promised to abide by the code of conduct of the institution and work hard to achieve her goals.

Another student, Godwin Friday, promised to be a good ambassador of the institution anywhere he finds himself.

The orientation exercise climaxed on Sunday, June 5, 2022 with an inter-denominational thanksgiving service where prayers were offered for the nation, Akwa Ibom State, the university as well as management and students.
