The Akwa Ibom Government has said that the state will no longer be a safe haven for hoodlums terrorizing and vandalizing electrical installations in some parts of the state thus putting the citizens in darkness.

The government has observed that all its concerted effort in making life comfortable for the citizens in the area of power supply has suffered a serious setback due to wanton vandalism of electricity installations in the state by persons who do not love progress.

The commissioner for works and fire service, Professor Eno Ibanga, who made this observation while inspecting two generating sets by Champion Breweries and Owot Uta, along Aka-Nung Udoe Road, which were among the public facilities vandalized recently, condemned in totality this act of babarism, regretting that most parts of the state have been thrown into darkness as a result of this barbaric act.

Professor Ibanga who also described as worrisome the activities of these persons, noted that this unwholesome practice involving the destruction of amored cables and other vital parts of the generators supplying street lightings in these areas should be discouraged.

The commissioner explained further that the vandalism of these facilities worth millions of naira does not only draw government back financially but has also brought economic setback to the citizens as most shops and offices doing businesses in these areas are not spared at night by thieves who take advantage of the darkness to perpetuate their evil acts.

The works and fire service boss called on members of the public to be extra-vigilant and report strange movements around public facilities to the appropriate quarters, while urging community and youth leaders in the respective communities as well as the entire community dwellers to also be extra-vigilant by ensuring that public facilities provided by government in their domains are protected against theft as well as assisting government to fish out the perpetrators of these acts within them.

He called on Akwa Ibom people to continue in their support for Gov Udom Emmanuel’s administration and his lofty programmes which have given the state its pride of place in the comity of states, reiterating that the governor wishes the state and the citizens well in all ramifications
