UYO

The membership base of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State has expanded with the recent surge of new registrants in the ongoing even -registration and membership revalidation exercise, coupled with the defection of the state deputy treasurer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Pearl Inwang, alongside the Ukanafun chapter secretary and an APC chieftain in Nsit Atai, Mr Kingsley Akpan (Kingibe).

The state chairman of PDP, Elder Aniekan Akpan, who met with ward registration agents of the party in Uyo, Tuesday February 22, stated that the party membership has expanded above half a million in the past couple of months, while commending the efforts of the registration volunteers who have played key role in registering new party members.

“Our party today is expanding and maintaining a good lead in Akwa Ibom State. We have registered over 500,000 new members over the past couple of months and we will not stop until we reach our target of getting majority of eligible adults in the state to be members of PDP”, he said.

Announcing plans to round off the first phase of the e-registration and commence the second phase, the chairman urged intending registrants to make haste and be enrolled as members of PDP as the process is convenient and easy.

Earlier, the state party chairman alongside other leaders of the party received the deputy state treasurer of the All ProgressivesCongress, Mr Pearl Inwang, Ukanafun chapter secretary of APC, Ubong Ikong and chieftain of the opposition party in Nsit Atai, Mr Kingsley Akpan, who have defected to PDP.

Declaring their defection at the state secretariat of PDP, the trio expressed happiness for the warm reception given them by PDP, saying that they were leaving a party characterized by chaos to join PDP which they described as a winning team.

“There is so much fight in APC and I was not comfortable.  There is no peace in that party and as someone who does not like chaos, I have decided to leave APC and join PDP where I can comfortably contribute my quota to the development of my state and local government area. From this moment, I pledge my total support, loyalty, commitment and dedication to the Peoples Democratic Party”, Inwang said.

Reacting, the state PDP chair noted that their defection was long overdue, noting that PDP in Akwa Ibom “has been very consistent in developmental strides in the state as well as political expansion.

“It is the beauty, orderliness and positive impacts of PDP in Akwa Ibom State that have attracted people from opposition parties to join the umbrella family. You can’t find it anywhere”, the party chairman said.
