A’Ibom Assembly Confirms Six Commissioner Designates

The Akwa Ibom House of Assembly has screened and confirmed six commissioner-designates for appointment into the State Executive Council. 

It could be recalled that the governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel,had on Monday, March 21, 2022, forwarded six nominees to the State House of Assembly for confirmation to enable him to fill the need space in the State Executive Council. 

In line with the Standing Order of the House, the speaker, MrAniekan Bassey, had subsequently referred the matter to the House Committee on Judiciary, Justice, Human Rights and Public Petitions and directed the Committee to report back to the House within 24 hours.

Presenting the report at plenary on Wednesday, chairman of the House Committee and member for Mkpat Enin State Constituency, Mr Victor Ekwere, explained that the credentials and other relevant documents of the nominees were screened and that they were interviewed on a wide range of issues, particularly, their areas of specialization. 

He further explained that the nominees met all constitutional requirements for appointment as commissioners, as outlined in Section 192 (4) and 106 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended. 

Ekwere commended Governor Udom Emmanuel for selecting men and women of proven integrity for appointment into the State Executive Council and further urged the nominees to give in their best when sworn in. 

Subsequently, the House after interacting with the nominees,considered the committee’s recommendation and confirmed their appointments as commissioners and special advisers. 

Those confirmed were Iniobong Edward Ekong, OffiongSamuel Offot, Aniefiok Isaac Nkom, Bassey B. Okon, Bob Almond Emem and Camillus Essien Umoh.

The speaker of the House, Mr Aniekan Bassey, in his remarks directed the clerk, Mrs Mandu Umoren, to communicate the resolution of the House to the governor for further action.

In the meantime, the House has adjourned plenary till Thursday, April 28, 2022 at 10am.
