General Udounwa (Rtd)

ABUJA
The hall of the Armed Forces Mess witnessed a large turn out of top military brass and other distinguished professionals across the country, as well as foreign nationals, who throng the venue to participate in the public presentation of a Book authored by General Solomon Udounwa (Rtd) and titled: Big Boots: Lessons from my military service .
The well attended event was chaired by Gen. T.Y Danjuma and had General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff as the special guest of honour, while Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, was the distinguished guest.
The author, who stunned the audience with very remarkable encomiums to Danjuma, intimated the audience on his motivation for writing the book in just about one year after his retirement.
The author who said he was motivated by so many factors, however posited that the desire to document his experiences for the younger generation seems outstanding.
According to him, “I was motivated by a lot of factors. The first one is that the military profession thrives on experiential learning. That is to say, younger generations of military officers and soldiers require the experiences of those who served before them to learn the issues of strategy, administration, operational management and the rest.
“If you don’t document your experiences, that could be lost and then those coming behind you might not be able to learn from all the exposure and all the trainings that you had while in service.
“My book is going to be of interest to serving personnel, to military historians, to the academia, for people who are interested in national and international security affairs and for the general public.
“I hope the younger generation of officers who are still serving will learn from some of the challenges I faced and how I was able to navigate through them.
“I hope they will learn that to serve in the military requires discipline, requires professionalism, requires integrity, requires character, requires courage and so many other virtues that an officer must display while undertaking his duties”.
He explained that the title of the book “Big Boots” was informed by the size of his feet and boots in the military, as he narrates his experience during childhood, when he was faced with bullies in primary school. But the day he decided to stamp his big feet on one of the bullies, that ended the reign of terror on him.
Thereafter, when he joined the military, he was given big boots, because of the size of his feet and this big boots is what he used everywhere he served to trample on terrorists and other threats to national security.
