As a total of 13,197 new students took oath of studentship, the management of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) has cautioned them against cultism, examination malpractice, indecent dressing, and disobedient to rules and regulations of the institution.
The immediate past vice chancellor, Professor Nyaudo Ndaeyo, stated this at the 33rd matriculation ceremony of university, which took place at the main campus along Nwaniba Road, Uyo.
Addressing the students at the event which was his last official function as vice chancellor, Ndaeyo said the ceremony was the climax of the 2025/2026 admission, having gone through rigorous admission processes.
He explained that in the course of the event, they would be required to pledge their loyalty to constituted authorities of the University to shun cultism, forgery, but obey the rules governing the system throughout their stay.
Ndaeyo also charged them to uphold and promote the ideals, principles, and values of the institution, as contained in the Students Handbook which had been made available to them during the orientation exercise.
“It is, therefore, in your own best interest to shun all activities that would be detrimental to your stay in this University as a student, for instance, avoid cultism, examination malpractice and other social vices.
“The University of Uyo as a brand, has stringent policy against fraudulent behaviour. I hereby remind you that all documents and presentations you have made during the screening exercise for your admission are the same document that would be used to screen you for graduation.
“Therefore, any attempt to alter anything in them will have criminal implications and would be considered as a breach of today’s matriculation oath,” Ndaeyo warned.
The vice chancellor stated that within its capacity, management has made available facilities and resources they would need as students to succeed in their academic, and also implement the Tertiary Institution and Social Health Insurance Programme (TISHIP).
He noted that all registered students were entitled to free medical treatment at the University Medical Centre, even during the holidays, and urged the new students to always seek assistance from heads of faculties, departments, and dean of students, stressing that the institution maintained an open door policy, and is prepared to dialogue on social and academic issues without resulting to conflict.
“Note that all problems can be resolved amicably without resulting to conflict”, he said.
Ndaeyo told them that the degrees of the University were awarded to deserving students found worthy in character and learning, pointing out that in achieving academic excellence, it was necessary that they exhibit exemplary character that befits their new status as students.
