– Over 300 Residents Receive Healthcare and Relief Support in Two-Day Programme

With a focus on community health, Sumedha Energy Limited, in partnership with NNPC Exploration and Production Limited (NEPL), organized a two-day free medical outreach for the elderly and families in Eastern Obolo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State

The outreach, held at the Primary Health Centre in Okoroette, was part of the company’s Community Development Programme and provided medical services to over 300 beneficiaries, most of whom were elderly residents.

The event featured free medical checkups, counselling, treatment, and drug prescriptions, along with the distribution of food items and relief materials to participants.

Traditional rulers and other beneficiaries hailed the intervention as timely and impactful. Chief Samuel Mbaya and Chief John Warribo, both of whom benefitted from the outreach, described the gesture as a “blessing” to the people of Eastern Obolo, many of whom are unable to afford routine hospital visits.

“I am grateful for this opportunity. This medical outreach is not just about medicine—it is about life and hope,” said Chief Warribo.

Another beneficiary, Madam Glory Efet, praised the organizers for reaching out to a vulnerable population often neglected. “Most of us cannot afford to go to the hospital regularly. This has brought health to our doorsteps,” she said.

ASP Otukor Emmanuel (rtd) added, “It’s heartwarming to see a company like Sumedha Energy remember the elderly. This is more than assistance—it’s compassion in action.”

The lead physician, Dr. Sunday Simon, commended the initiative and linked it to the Arise Agenda of Governor Umo Eno, which emphasizes healthcare and wellbeing, especially for rural communities.

“You can’t imagine what many rural dwellers are going through until you interact with them,” Dr. Simon said. “Most of the cases we’ve seen here are hypertension-related, and for some, this is the first time they’re being diagnosed. Without this outreach, many of them could have suffered stroke or worse.”

According to Emem Thomas, the Community Development Programme Coordinator of Sumedha Energy Limited, the company is intentional about identifying and supporting underserved groups in the communities where it operates.

“The elderly are often a forgotten segment. That’s why we focused on them—providing medical care and food items to ease their burdens,” Mrs Thomas said. “Sumedha Energy is committed to sustaining this culture of giving back and working with stakeholders to uplift the standard of living of our host communities.”

This latest medical outreach adds to the growing portfolio of Sumedha Energy’s impactful Community Development Programmes, which also include educational empowerment programmes, youth skills acquisition initiatives, and infrastructure support projects such as the renovation of schools, provision of learning materials, and improvement of access roads.

Through consistent community engagement and strategic social investments, Sumedha Energy Limited and NNPC E&P Limited continue to demonstrate their deep-rooted commitment to sustainable development and human capacity building in Eastern Obolo and beyond.
