One person has been confirmed dead and two others injured in a fatal road accident that occurred along Uyo-Itu Road, by Urua EkpaJunction, in Itu local government area of Akwa Ibom State.

The accident, which occurred at about 10pm on Thursday night, involved a mini bus with registration number UYY207AE (Suzuki Every) and a parked Mack Truck with registration number JF29NER.

A statement by the Akwa Ibom State sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC),Matthew Olonisaye, issued by Route Enlightenment Officer, Paul James, attributed the crash to overspeeding.

The sector commander described the accident as unfortunate as it could have been avoided, adding that the injured have since been taken to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital for treatment while the deceased has been deposited at the mortuary unit of the hospital.

He warned drivers and all road users to avoid night travels, drunk driving, excessive speeding, use of phone while driving and, above all, obey traffic rules and regulations while using the road to avoid crashes.

The sector commander, while commiserating with the family of the deceased, wished the injured quick recovery.

He further advised drivers to attach value to lives and guide against incessant loss of lives and property by ensuring alignment with the endorsement of the General Assembly of the second United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety that advocates for 30km/h maximum speed limits wherever pedestrians, cyclists or other vulnerable road users mix with motor vehicles.

Olonisaye said, “This has a new target to reduce road deaths and injuries by 50% by 2030. Therefore, night travels should not be embarked upon.”
