The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Wednesday, reinstated Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s national secretary.
The reinstatement, which comes after a high-level meeting of the party stalwarts at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, has put an end to months of legal battles and uncertainties that rocked the party.
The decision was announced by the acting national chairman of the party, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, in the presence of all stakeholders who where in attendance, including Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi; former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki.
According to Damagum, “it was a difficult but necessary decision. The Supreme Court made its pronouncement, and we must respect it. The party remains supreme, and this is about protecting the institution.”
The power struggle for the position of national secretary of the PDP began after Senator Anyanwu secured the party’s governorship ticket in Imo State.
While he focused on the campaign, the South-East caucus of the PDP announced Sunday Udeh-Okoye, a former national youth leader, as his replacement.
Failing to actualize his victory at the governorship attempt, Anyanwu returned and made moves to reclaim his office, but was met with resistance and this opened up the pathway to the court.
In December 2024, the Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu ruled in favour of Udeh-Okoye, but this judicial victory for Udeh-Okoye was short-lived as the Supreme Court overturned that decision.
As a result of that verdict, the party was thrown into confusion and uncertainty loomed, as various camps sprung up.
