The Offot Ukwa People’s Assembly has congratulated Prof. Christopher Nyong Ekong on his appointment as the 9th substantive Vice Chancellor of the University of Uyo, describing his emergence as a testament to his intellectual depth, administrative competence, and integrity.
In a congratulatory message dated May 5, 2026, and signed by its Coordinator, Otuekong Enefiok Ekefre, the Assembly noted that Ekong’s appointment followed a rigorous and competitive selection process, reflecting strong confidence in his capacity to reposition the institution for greater relevance and global competitiveness.
The group stated that at a time when universities face mounting pressure to innovate, diversify funding, and respond to changing societal demands, the new Vice Chancellor’s leadership offers a strategic opportunity to strengthen academic excellence, research output, and community impact.
It urged Ekong to promote inclusiveness, institutional cohesion, and a shared sense of purpose among key stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, and host communities, noting that sustainable progress in the university system depends on trust, collaboration, and visionary leadership.
The Assembly also called on the Vice Chancellor to internationalize the university through strategic partnerships, global academic linkages, and engagement with donor agencies and development partners. According to the group, such efforts would expand infrastructure, boost research capacity, and improve internally generated revenue without increasing the financial burden on students and parents.
As a key stakeholder in the host community, the Assembly emphasized the importance of strengthening town-and-gown relations and ensuring that the university continues to serve as a driver of socio-economic development in its environment.
The group expressed confidence that under Ekong’s leadership, the University of Uyo would enhance its academic reputation, consolidate institutional stability, and evolve into a globally connected centre of excellence.
It further pledged its support and partnership to the new Vice Chancellor as he assumes office.
