As part of efforts to bring an end to digital violence against women and girls in Nigeria in the cyber space, spouses of governors and critical stakeholders have brainstormed to map out strategies for lasting solutions.
This was part of activities of the 6th Annual Summit of the Nigeria Governors Spouses’ Forum, (NGSF), which took place recently at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.
The summit, with the theme, “United for Change: Men and Women Ending Digital Violence Together,” brought together government leaders, development partners, and Civil Society Organisations, who committed to building safer digital spaces for Nigerians, especially women and children.
The coordinator of the Office of the First Lady of Akwa Ibom State, Lady Helen Eno Obareki who was one of the panelists at the summit, moderated by the Chairperson of the Nigeria Governors’ Spouses Forum, and wife of Kwara State Governor Professor Olufolake AbdulRazaq, on the topic: “Safeguarding Her Digital Space: Policies and Platforms for Protection,” highlighted the power of collaborations in ending the escalating menace of digital violence against women and girls across the country.
Obareki shared practical nuggets on how government, civil society groups, and tech companies can work together in ensuring prompt response and elimination of online abuse and attacks in the cyber space, as well as strategies to deploy to strengthen digital safety for women and girls.
Her appearance on the panel, four weeks after she hosted female tech leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators, and policymakers to the GIFA Women in Tech Breakfast Roundtable in Uyo, where she announced the yearly training of 500 women in Akwa Ibom in relevant tech skills, was very symbolic.
The summit, which was attended by wives of governors from all the states in Nigeria, also featured another panel discussion on the topic: “Brothers for Change: Engaging Men as Allies in Ending Violence in the Digital Space,” in recognition of the critical role of men in shaping safer online environments.
