The Akwa Ibom governor, Pastor Umo Eno has been honoured by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), as the “Media Friendly-Governor 2024”.
Also honoured by the NUJ was the Katsina State counterpart, Mallam Dikko Ummaru Radda, as the “Workers/Media-Friendly Governor 2024”.
The two governors and others were given accolades at the 3rd edition of Annual Milestone Recognition of Media Icons in Nigeria 2024, held at the Airport Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, yesterday.
The honour according to the NUJ national president, Chief Chris Isiguzo, is in recognition of the governors understanding of the vital role media plays in a thriving democracy, as well as their demonstration of unwavering support for the media and commitment to transparent governance.
Isiguzo said the governors open-door policies and genuine commitment to transparency in all spheres have been pivotal in fostering a robust relationship with the media.
Responding to the honour done him in particular, the Akwa Ibom governor who was represented at the event by his deputy, Senator Akon Eyakenyin, in his goodwill message, appreciated and commended the leadership of NUJ for the honour and pledged to do more in supporting the Union’s members who he described as partners in progress.
He urged the media to hold public officers accountable to their promises and to also be part of nation building.
Chairman on the occasion, Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye while commending members of the pen profession, urged them to remain committed to their duties without fear or favour.
Responding on behalf of the awardees, Dame Comfort Obi, pledged their continuous support to journalists and the journalism profession.
Others awardees at the event were, the former deputy governor of the state, Mr Moses Ekpo who bagged the Media Icon Award, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ini Ememobong who was honoured as the most supportive information commission, Mallam Yakubu Mohammed, Mr. Dan Agbese, Dr. Eddie Iroh, Mr. Lade Bonuola, Mr. Nosa Igiebor, Mrs. Tonu Okewale Sonaiya, Comrade Comfort Umanah, HRH Eze Geo Anika, Mrs. Aina Lewis, Chief Date Babarinsa, Pa Jola Ogunlusi and Usman Shuaibu Leman.
