As part of the 2025 Public Service Week Celebration, the Mainstream Service Team on Friday defeated the Unified Local Government Service Team in a novelty football match with 3 goals, carting home a cash prize of N300,000.
The victory was recorded at the end of a fantastic 90 minutes of the match, organised by the Office of the Head of Civil Service at the Uyo Township Stadium.
The head of Civil Service, Elder Effiong Essien, who also announced the sum of N200,000 to the losers, commended the two teams for the good team spirit and sportsmanship demonstrated throughout the match.
Essien expressed deep appreciation to the State governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for his love for workers by approving the football match as part of the week-long activities emphasising that the exercise has created opportunity for workers to relax and entertain themselves outside, away from their routine daily busy schedules.
Describing the governor as workers-friendly, Essien listed the numerous feats of the governor to Akwa Ibom workforce to include approval of the 2025 Public Service Week, approval for the release of the 2024 promotions, prompt payment of salaries and pensions as well as human capacity development of workers, among others.
The head of civil service commended the State Commissioner for sports, Elder Paul Bassey, for opening the Uyo Township Stadium for workers to use at such a short period and expressed deep appreciation to the entire management and staff of Ministry of Sports for keeping the facility neat and clean for the workers’ to use.
Earlier, the permanent secretary, Ministry of Sports, Mrs. Rosemary Ubia had welcomed Akwa Ibom workers to the Uyo Township Stadium, disclosing that the use of the facility was part of the contribution of her Ministry toward the success of the 2025 Public Service Novelty Football Match.
On her part, the chairman, Planning Committee of the 2025 Public Service Week Celebration in the State, Mrs Grace Akpan, who is the permanent secretary, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, expressed deep gratitude to God Almighty for the clement weather, thanked Governor Eno for approving the celebration for workers as well as the head of Civil Service for interpreting the vision of the governor as it relates to the growth of the workforce.
Akpan expressed deep appreciation to the College of Permanent Secretaries, led by the dean, Barr Uduak Eyo-Nsa, for their support and cooperation and reminded all about the remaining two activities of the weeklong celebration including; the road walk on Saturday 28th and Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, June 29 and requested that all should turn-up and complete the weeklong event in grand style.
