The Abasi Peoples’ Foundation (APF) has received a major boost as the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Sunny James, pledged his support and accepted to serve as a patron of the foundation.
A delegation of the foundation, led by Elder Archibong Archibong, paid a courtesy visit to the labour leader, seeking his guidance and endorsement in promoting the vision of the APF.
Addressing the meeting, Elder Archibong said the APF seeks to unite people across the 31 local government areas of Akwa Ibom and seven local government areas of Cross River State who share the cultural identity of calling God “Abasi.” He described the NLC chairman as “a bishop with a very large congregation,” noting his strategic position as leader of a vast network of workers across the state.
“We are here to formally seek your advice and request you to serve as a patron to this noble cause,” Archibong said.
In his remarks, Comrade Sunny James thanked the APF delegation for the visit and applauded the group’s mission to foster unity, cultural pride, and regional development. He, however, cautioned that such an initiative may face early challenges, especially with funding, but urged them to remain patient and focused.
He pledged to support the group in every way he could and accepted the role of patron.
Other members of the APF delegation, including Hon. Imo Essien and Favour Onobo, spoke on the foundation’s goals and activities aimed at promoting unity and sustainable development among the Abasi-speaking communities.
The visit ended with a mutual commitment to work together to drive positive change across the region.
