NAWOJ, WALGON Forge Partnership To Empower Women

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, has strengthened ties with the Wives of All Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria (WALGON), Akwa Ibom Chapter, to enhance the welfare of women, girls, and vulnerable persons in the State.
During a courtesy visit to the WALGON president, Mrs. Akaninyene Uwemedimo, in Uyo, on Tuesday, NAWOJ leadership emphasised the need for collaborative efforts in promoting the empowerment, advocacy, and social support for women at the grassroots.
Leading the delegation, the chairperson of Akwa Ibom NAWOJ, Comrade Nsikak Okon, highlighted the association’s commitment to driving positive change through strategic partnerships.    
Okon also used the opportunity to inform WALGON members about NAWOJ’s upcoming event to commemorate the 2025 International Women’s Day, which took place on Friday, March 28, 2025, noting that the event would focus on addressing key issues affecting women in the State as well as the empowerment of petty traders across the 31 local government areas with seed capital.
In response, the Akwa Ibom WALGON president, Mrs. Akaninyene Uwemedimo, who is also the wife of the chairman, Uyo Local Government Council, commended NAWOJ for its dedication to amplifying women’s voices.
She assured of WALGON’s support for those initiatives that promote the well-being of women and pledged collaboration on projects that uplift the less privileged.
  In the NAWOJ delegation were the vice chairperson, Comrade Udeme Hosea; State secretary, Comrade Mary Ekere; Treasurer, Comrade Vivian Essiet; Financial Secretary, Comrade Itoro-Etas Iniobong; Ex-Officio member, Comrade Patience Matthew; State NUJ Treasurer, Comrade Imaikop Robert; as well as Comrade Aniema Ubom and Comrade Uduak Akai.
Also in attendance were members of WALGON, including the wife of the chairman, Uruan LGA, Mrs. Ndifreke Ekpenyong; wife of the chairman, Etinan LGA, Mrs. Emily Umoh; wife of the chairman, Ika LGA, Mrs. Idongesit Nwoko; wife of the chairman, Okobo LGA, Mrs. Nelly Henshaw; and wife of the chairman, Nsit Ubium LGA, Mrs. Imaobong Alfred. 
Others included the wife of the chairman, Oruk Anam LGA, Deaconess Juliana Festus; wife of the chairman, Ibiono Ibom LGA, Mrs. Etiemana Asuakak; wife of the chairman, Ukanafun LGA, Mrs. Mokut Ukpanah and wife of the chairman, Nsit Atai LGA, Mrs. Emem Nyong.
