A total of 1.2 billion naira has been released by the Akwa Ibom State Government for payment of one month wardrobe allowance to teachers in public primary and secondary schools in the state as promised by Governor Umo Eno.
In their separate letters of appreciation sent to the governor, through the Ministry of Education, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Akwa Ibom State Wing; the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), and the Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON), respectively, thanked Governor Umo Eno for redeeming his commitment to pay one-off wardrobe allowance to teachers in government-owned primary and secondary schools in the state, which he made on May 17, 2024, during the inauguration of the reconstructed Christ the King and Ewet Model Schools in Uyo.
The NUT, in the letter, expressed appreciation to the governor for the payment of 50,000 wardrobe allowance to each teacher in public primary and post primary schools across the state, describing the governor’s gesture as an encouragement that will not only enhance educational advancement in the state, but equally “boost the image of the teachers.”
The teachers’ body, whose letter of appreciation was jointly endorsed by the state chairman, Comrade Edet Emenyi and senior assistant secretary general, Comrade Sam Umo-Inyang, on behalf of the teachers, assured the governor of their readiness to reciprocate the gesture through demonstration of total loyalty, hard work and commitment to service.
In their letter of gratitude, the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), on behalf of the Principals of secondary and technical schools and their teachers, expressed profound gratitude to the governor for the payment of the one-off wardrobe allowance to all the teachers in the employ of Akwa Ibom State, describing the governor’s action as unprecedented act of benevolence ever showed to teachers in the state.
The ANCOPSS’ letter, which was sealed by the state president, Mr Steve Akpabio and secretary, Mr Ime Ekpo, also conveyed the body’s appreciation to Governor Umo Eno for ensuring the sustenance of the state government’s free and compulsory education policy in Akwa Ibom which, it noted, include free tuition fees, payment of the West African Examinations Council’s fees for final examination of students in the exiting classes, construction of model schools across the state, provision of free uniforms, school bags and shoes to the students, among other support programmes.
The association further thanked the governor for the payment of subvention to schools, “especially payments for 1st, 2nd and 3rd terms of 2023/2024 session within the life span of the session without any default.”
While appreciating Governor Eno for initiating the Akwa Ibom/UK Education Exchange Programme for students, principals and teachers, the body assured the governor of its unwavering support and commitments in the interpretation of the ARISE Agenda as it concerns the education sector.
Similarly, the Association of Primary School Head teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON), Akwa Ibom State Wing, in their letter jointly endorsed by the state chairman, Comrade Etim Akpan and secretary, Comrade Mayen Akpan, thanked the governor for donating the ARISE customised exercise books to pupils across the state, as well as ensuring the release of funds for payment of backlog of outstanding leave grant to primary school teachers in the state.
Others include, release of promotion letters to deserving teachers, construction of model schools in each of the 31 local government areas of Akwa Ibom and payment of 20,000 naira bonus to civil servants in the state.
The body, however, prayed God to grant the state chief executive needed strength and good health to continue in his service to the state.
