Lady Helen Obareki’s appointment as the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady may have been well-intentioned for the purpose of continuing the legacies for which the the departed mother of the state was known. But it also signaled renewed hope for the underprivileged. On both scales, she has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to uplifting those in need.

Obareki’s approach has been characterised by a nuanced understanding of the complex struggles faced by the poor and less-privileged. Rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all method, she has demonstrated exceptional insight and empathy, tailoring her initiatives to meet the specific needs of various communities. This adaptive approach has allowed her to foster meaningful connections and create sustainable programmes that empower individuals rather than merely providing temporary relief. She has efficiently mobilised resources, built networks of support and engaged community members, leading to tangible improvements in the lives of countless families.

One of the most commendable aspects of Obareki’s work is her unwavering passion for social justice and equity. Recognising that systemic barriers often perpetuate cycles of poverty, she has championed initiatives that transcend mere charity. By focusing on education, health care and vocational training, she has championed empowerment through knowledge and skill acquisition.

Her establishment of scholarship programmes for underprivileged children, along with vocational training for youths and women, has opened doors that were previously closed. These initiatives not only provide immediate assistance but also instill a sense of hope and opportunity for future generations.

Moreover, Obareki’s compassionate leadership has drawn attention to the importance of mental and emotional support for those in distress.

Understanding that poverty is not solely a financial issue, she has implemented programmes that address mental health, fostering resilience and self-worth among the vulnerable. Her outreach efforts, which include counseling and wellness workshops, have been invaluable, equipping individuals with coping mechanisms and a support network.

Obareki’s initiatives have also been characterised by a collaborative spirit. By working alongside local non-profit organisations, government agencies and grassroot organisations, she has forged partnerships that enhance the effectiveness of her programmes. This ability to collaborate seamlessly has expanded the reach and impact of her efforts, uniting disparate groups under a common cause—a cause rooted in dignity, respect and the fundamental right to a better life.

The example set by Obareki extends beyond the realm of charitable acts; it embodies a call to action for all citizens. Through her tireless work, she has ignited a passion for social responsibility and civic engagement within the community. Her storytelling—a blend of personal narrative and shared experiences—has resonated deeply with citizens, inspiring them to contribute to the welfare of their neighbours. In fostering a culture of empathy and active participation, she has ignited a collective movement toward social change.

In her role as the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Obareki has indeed performed beyond expectations. Her dedication, innovative thinking and profound empathy have reshaped the narrative surrounding leadership and philanthropy in GIFA. By prioritising the needs of the poor and less-privileged, she has not only honoured her mother’s legacy but also carved out her own formidable place in the hearts of those she serves.

In conclusion, Obareki stands as a remarkable figure in contemporary philanthropy. Her unswerving commitment to the welfare of the disadvantaged, her partnerships that amplify impact and her ability to inspire a shared vision of social justice have cemented her role as a transformative leader. As she continues her journey, it is evident that her story is one of resilience, hope and an indomitable spirit that seeks to uplift not just individuals but entire communities.

In honour of her outstanding contributions, Obareki deserves our highest commendation and support in her quest to build a more equitable and compassionate society.
