Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom has emerged the winner of the Governor of the Year (Fiscal Discipline) at the Independent Awards 2023 ceremony, which took place on Saturday, May 4, at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Organised by INL, publishers of Daily Independent newspaper, the event also had the Yobe State governor, Mai Mala Buni, bag the Man of the Year Award; Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State as the Tech Innovative Governor of the Year; while Barr. Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State received the award for Governor of the Year (Community Empowerment); and the Taraba State governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, bagged the award for Governor of the Year (Education and Youth Empowerment).
Other governors who received the INL prestigious award were the governor of Enugu State, Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, who clinched the Governor of the Year (Urban Development) award; Gombe State governor, Gov. Inuwa Yaya, who won the Governor of the Year Award (Health); Ekiti State governor, Biodun Oyebanji, got the Governor of the Year (Community Development) award.
Speaking, the chairman of the occasion, Olusegun Osoba, who also presented the award to Governor Eno, said: “Tonight is not a night of speeches but a night to honour awardees across all areas, including politics, religion, and culture.”
Osoba commended INL and members of the award committee “for their abilities to select these high-class recipients who were honoured”.
Responding, Pastor Umo Eno, who was represented on the occasion by his commissioner for information, Comrade Ini Ememobong, said, “Though a year is too short a time for assessment, it is not too short a period to indicate where the priority of an administration will lie.
“To be identified early in the life of the administration with fiscal discipline is a thing of great honour, which the governor sees as an incentive to do more in the remaining years. The ARISE Agenda is primed to deliver maximally to the people of Akwa Ibom State, and we are totally committed to its execution.”
Earlier in his address, the managing director and chief executive officer, Independent Newspapers, Steve Omanufeme, said that for the year 2023, the company was able to identify and recognise those who had performed excellently in their various areas of endeavour.
Omanufeme said,“The awardees were selected strictly based on their achievements while in office in 2023 without compromising the newspaper’s integrity as the most credible newspaper in Nigeria, with millions of followers to its credit”.
Other top personalities honoured at the popular awards included the speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Tajudeen Abass, who bagged the Legislator of the Year (National) Award, as well as Chief Olabode Ibiyinka George and Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who were both honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
