In a bold step towards empowering victims of gender-based violence (GBV), the Golden Initiative For All (GIFA), in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has launched a four-day skills acquisition programme for survivors of GBV in Akwa Ibom.
The training, which commenced at the Women Development Centre, IBB Way, Uyo, seeks to provide a lifeline for 20 selected survivors through hands-on training in hairdressing, baking and pastries, makeover, and sewing.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the senior special assistant to the Governor on General Duties, Dr. Ann Abraham, highlighted the core mandate of GIFA. These include maternal and child healthcare, enhancing literacy and learning, environmental health, women empowerment, disease prevention, care for the elderly and persons living with disabilities (PLWD), and gender-based violence prevention and response.
Abraham appreciated the First Lady for the opportunity to serve, adding, “GIFA is about everyone in the state. We aim to reach out to survivors and vulnerable persons who have been affected by GBV. With UNFPA’s support, we are working toward zero tolerance for gender-based violence.”
She disclosed that the 20 beneficiaries were drawn from GBV shelter homes, referrals from the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), and the state’s Gender-Based Violence Committee, chaired by Akwa Ibom First Lady designate, Lady Helen Obareki.
“We had people come to our office with complaints, and when this opportunity came up, we called them back to empower them. The selected skills are designed to help them earn a living daily,” she added.
Abraham also assured that upon completion of the programme, beneficiaries would not only receive starter packs aligned with their chosen skills but also continue training with resource persons beyond the four-day exercise depending on their skills to be acquired.
In a goodwill message, the chairperson of FIDA, Uyo branch, Chief Magistrate Helen Umana, commended the initiative, noting that the impact of GBV extends beyond individuals to entire families and communities.
She expressed confidence that the empowerment would boost the survivors’ confidence and open doors for a brighter future.
“To the survivors, you are not alone. Healing is possible. Keep growing and shining,” she said, while appreciating Lady Obareki’s consistent advocacy efforts against GBV.
Also speaking, Dr. Uduak Asian Ekong, who represented the commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, urged the trainees to take the training seriously, saying, “This is help that will transform your life and family. Embrace it wholeheartedly and let there be a multiplier effect”.
Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Akwa Ibom State chapter, Comrade Nsikak Okon, lauded GIFA and the Office of the First Lady for giving hope to survivors.
“Gone are the days GBV survivors were left behind. Today, they have a voice, a skill, and renewed hope,” she said.
Goodwill messages were also received from Obonganwan Patricia Essien Obot, while Ukeme Ime Sylvania, Uduak Edet, and Dorothy Edet delivered votes of thanks on behalf of the trainees.
The event featured presentations and demonstrations by facilitators in each skill area, with an inspection of the training sessions by GIFA officials marking the high point of the day.
In attendance at the event were leaders of various organisations in the state and the press secretary, Office of the First Lady, Mrs Uduak Ekong and team members of GIFA.
