The Federal Character Commissioner representing Akwa Ibom State, Rt. Hon. Eunice Thomas, has underscored the urgent need for strict implementation of the federal character principle as a pathway to fostering unity, equity, and lasting peace in Nigeria.
Thomas made this assertion during a reception organised in her honour alongside the newly appointed State Director at the Uyo office of the Federal Character Commission.
She stressed that adherence to the principle would not only promote fairness in the distribution of resources but also strengthen national cohesion.
According to her, “If we strive to fully implement the federal character principle, Nigeria will be more united and peaceful.”
She noted that the Commission was established as a unifying institution to ensure equitable representation and fair allocation of opportunities across the country, describing it as “the conscience of the nation.”
The Commissioner commended members of staff for their resilience and dedication despite challenging working conditions, describing them as patriotic Nigerians committed to national service.
Thomas encouraged them to sustain their commitment, assuring that efforts would be made to improve their welfare and working environment.
“Your welfare is paramount to me. You will be properly motivated to give your best. Together, we must leverage our relationships, work diligently, and refuse to mortgage the future of Nigeria,”
“This is the time to rewrite history by doing what is right for Nigerians. Transparency will be our watchword as we strive to earn the trust of the people,” she said.
Thomas expressed optimism about her tenure, pledging to work collaboratively with staff to achieve meaningful progress.
She also appreciated the warm reception accorded her and prayed for God’s blessings upon the workforce.
The Commissioner further acknowledged the support of key political figures in her appointment, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
She described her appointment as a demonstration of trust and pledged not to disappoint those who believed in her capacity.
“I thank them for believing in me. By the grace of God, I will not let them down,” she affirmed.
Earlier, the State Director of the Commission in Uyo, Mr. Chukwudi Christopher Chizea, expressed excitement over the Commissioner’s arrival, describing her as a valuable asset whose experience and political pedigree would help address existing challenges in the office.
“With your leadership, we are confident that this office will overcome its challenges. We pledge our full loyalty and support,” he said, adding that increased public sensitisation about the Commission’s role would be prioritised, including the need for proper office identification through signage.
Also speaking, the Deputy Director of Administration, Pastor Akpan James Akpan, noted that the emergence of the new State Director and the Commissioner signaled a new phase for the Commission.
He expressed confidence that their leadership would drive positive transformation and reposition the office for greater impact.
The event highlighted renewed optimism among staff, with a shared commitment to advancing the mandate of the Federal Character Commission in promoting fairness, inclusiveness, and national unity.
