The Akwa Ibom deputy governor has charged wives of local government chairmen to be instruments of peace, both in their homes and the society.
Senator Akon Eyakenyi gave the charge when members of Wives of All Local Government Association Of Nigeria (WALGON) recently visited her in the Deputy Governor’s Lodge, Government House, Uyo.
Eyakenyi appreciated the State president of WALGON, Mrs Akaninyene Udo, for ensuring that members of the association remained united, noting that maintaining the spirit of togetherness, was the greatest feat she has achieved.
She reminded them of the place of God in the quest for success, urging them to allow God to direct their destiny and the office entrusted to them.
Eyakenyi charged them to be fair and God fearing, stating that if they fear God, they will do unto others as unto Him in the discharge of their duties.
The deputy governor particularly emphasized the need for humility, charging them to respect and support their husbands.
“When you’re able to give your husbands respect, no matter the situation, you humble yourself and extend that respect to the people of the local government area,” the deputy governor admonished and advised them to make an impact and play their part in mobilizing women, children, youths and men, as the first ladies of their respective local government areas.
“I want you to note that you are the eye and representatives of the governor at the local government areas. How you relate with people in the grassroots matters and by doing this, you give your husband a good image and by extension, the State.”
Eyakenyi stressed that women should be actively involved in agriculture in order to have enough food to feed their families while making extra income for themselves.
Remarking on the disposition of Umo Eno administration towards women, she noted that the governor recognises the role and efforts of women, urging them to take advantage of the opportunities created for them by the administration.
“Akwa Ibom State has fulfilled the 35 per cent affirmative action. From appointments to elective positions, you have women. His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno understands and recognizes the role of women. I encourage you to take advantage of the current and emerging opportunities while grooming younger women for future positions,” she charged.
Earlier, the president of the Association and wife of Uyo Local Government chairman, Mrs Akaninyene Udo, said the meeting was conceived to strengthen the existing cordial relationship with the deputy governor and reinforce synergy for the benefit of the State.
Udo commended the governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for his visionary leadership and for giving them opportunities to thrive in their local government areas, saying his style of leadership has brought progress to the State.
She pledged the loyalty of WALGON to the Governor Eno-led government, promising to assist in replicating the ARISE Agenda at the grassroots.
The Uyo First Lady described Senator Eyakenyi as a role model for women and a peaceful leader who has contributed to bringing stability to Akwa Ibom.
The event featured the presentation of a souvenir to the deputy governor by the President of WALGON.
