The Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) has been lauded for conducting a free, fair and transparent local government elections in the state.
The commissioner for education, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet, who made the commendation, Saturday, shortly after casting her vote at unit 10, Ikot Ibritam Ward 1, Oruk Anam Local Government Area, expressed satisfaction over what she described as timely release of materials and commencement of voting by the electoral umpire, as well as the orderly behaviours exhibited by the electorates generally in the area.
Etiebet, who called for the sustenance of the tempo in future elections, said election into political offices at any level was the civic responsibility of every patriotic and law-abiding citizen of the country.
As at the time of filing this report, some of the election observers who monitored the exercise in some other parts of the local government area, said similar atmosphere was witnessed in other polling units across the 16 political wards of the local government area.
It would be recalled that the AKISIEC chairman, Elder Aniedi Ikoiwak, had, at a meeting held recently with representatives of political parties, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), and other stakeholders, assured Akwa Ibom people of AKISIEC’s preparedness to conduct a free, fair and credible local government election where all the candidates would be given a level playing field during the exercise.
