Eket Ward 2 Urban Unity Football Competition, organised by the commissioner for sports, has ended with Ekpene Ukpa village emerging as Champions after defeating Idua Village 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw at the end of regulation time.
At the grand finale of the competition, Saturday, at Eket Township Stadium, the commissioner for sports, Elder Paul Bassey, doled out N2.5 million as prize money to the teams with the first position winners going home with N750, 000. The second position team got N500, 000, while the 3rd position team got N250, 000.
The fourth position team took home N150, 000 and the fifth position winner got N100, 000, while consolation prizes were presented to deserving individuals. The gesture to reward the teams and deserving individuals was the commissioner’s way of motivating them and in line with the saying that “charity begins at home”.
Bassey thanked indigenes of the ward for their moral support and for standing by him throughout the duration of the tournament.
The sports commissioner urged youths of the Ward to make good use of their talents, especially in the areas of sports, saying, “Let me urge our youths to embrace sports. As at today sports is a major booster to so many economies. It is one of the greatest employers of labour, taking a look at the global perspective”.
He eulogised Akwa Ibom governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for investing heavily in sports development, adding that the governor is a sports enthusiast who believes in the discovery and nurturing of talents.
The former chairman of Akwa United Football Club outlined Governor Eno’s imprint in sports development to include hosting of Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival as well as the Governor’s Cup Football Competition, and the ongoing construction of a sports academy in Eket.
Bassey urged the youths to support Governor Eno’s ARISE Agenda and further mobilise support for his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“As a card carrying member of the All Progressives Congress, I urge you to support the governor and register with our party the APC. It is worrisome that some of our people have not registered for their PVC. I urge you to visit the INEC office behind Eket Stadium and register, especially those from 18 years and above.
Also, the commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, Mkpisong Frank Archibong, who performed the official kickoff at the grandfinale to mark the end of a week-long football competition, said the Ward 2 Urban Unity Cup Competition was a signal for other tournaments in Eket Local Government Area, and a preparation for the Governor’s Cup Competition, adding, “It’s a great opportunity to explore”.
Archibong assured of the governor’s goodwill for Eket people as dozens of life touching projects are earmarked to commence in the local government and encouraged the people of Ward 2 Urban and Eket people, generally, to continually throw their weight behind Governor Eno for a second term in office.
He also donated cash prizes to support of his sports counterpart and Ward 2 Urban.
On his part, the member representing Eket State Constituency in the House of Assembly, Dr. Nsidibe Akata, urged the people of Ward 2 Urban to believe in the ARISE Agenda of the State governor and to massively vote for Governor Eno for a second term in office.
The event, which was well attended, also had in attendance, village head of Odoro Atabong, Dr. Ferdinand Ikwang; Hon. Johnson Esenowo, Councillor representing Urban 1; Senior special assistant to the governor, Comrade Amos Etuk; State chairman of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Comrade Emmanuel Akpan; Chairman of Federated Chapel of NUJ, Comrade bassey Ibiatisugho; Comrade Mfon Bassey, special assistant to the governor on Media; Mr Samuel Jackson, personal assistant to the governor; Mr Bassey, APC ward chairman; members of the local organizing committee of the competition, among others
The high point of the football competition was the presentation of a golden trophy to Ekpene Ukpa team as the winners, and the decoration of the winners and runners up with medals.
Participating teams were from Ekpene Ukpa, Idua, Idung Udofa and Atabong Villages.
