*Clarification on SPFL Operations and Call for Peaceful Coexistence in Ikot Abasi LGA*
The Ikot Abasi League of Professionals (IALP) has taken note of recent concerns raised by “Mboho Ikot Abasi” regarding the operations of Sterling Petrochemical & Fertilizer Limited (SPFL) in our Local Government Area. As stakeholders committed to the growth and harmony of Ikot Abasi, we believe it’s essential to provide clarity on these matters.
Our investigations and findings, supported by verifiable documents and stakeholder testimonies, indicate that many allegations may be based on incomplete information or misunderstandings. We’d like to address some of these concerns:
– The Okopedi Road is within SPFL’s operational perimeter, and the controlled security gate is a standard safety measure to protect lives ,property and keep account of vehicles moving in / out of Company area. The measure has provided no hindrance to community’s movement since last one year or so.
– Land acquisition and compensation for economic crops and structures were done in accordance with the Land Use Act and verified by relevant authorities.
– The Host Community Development Trust (HCDT) framework is being implemented in line with the Petroleum Industry Act, with Ikot Abasi LGA represented on the Board of Trustees. The formation of Management and Advisory Committee will see more representation of each community’s in the LGA.
– Employment practices at SPFL prioritize locals for junior and semi-skilled jobs, with training programs in place to prepare them for higher-level positions.
– SPFL’s Environmental Impact Assessment was approved by the Federal Ministry of Environment, and environmental monitoring continues with reports available for review.
We recognize SPFL’s significant investments in Ikot Abasi, creating jobs, funding scholarships, and building infrastructure. We urge all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and peaceful coexistence, working together for the prosperity of our LGA.
As sons and daughters of Ikot Abasi, we understand the value of peace and the devastating consequences of conflict. We are convinced that by working together, engaging in constructive dialogue, and leveraging the opportunities presented by SPFL’s investments, we can build a brighter future for ourselves, our children, and future generations. Let us join hands to promote peace, unity, and development, and ensure that Ikot Abasi remains a place of prosperity and growth for all.
