In its determination to play big in the real estate market in Lagos and Abuja, respectively, the Akwa Ibom government will soon commence construction at glittering 19-Storey Ibom Towers and the Ibom 3-Star Hotel in Abuja, the country’s capital.
The State governor, Pastor Umo Eno, who stated this last Monday, in his broadcast marking the 37th anniversary of the creation of Akwa Ibom State at Government House, Uyo, said there was need for readiness of government to utilise moribund assets of the State for productive investments.
Eno said in the area of tourism, government hopes to commission one of the most audacious projects in the South South region of the country – the ARISE Park – which he described as a testament to foresight and passion.
He recalled that the location of the park was once a gully erosion-ravaged ravine and home to criminal elements, and is currently a world-class park with a 9-hole Golf Course, artificial lakes with floating restaurants and a world-class park for family relaxation.
According to him, the facility when commissioned, will change the face of tourism in the South South region and, indeed, the nation.
The governor made known that work is also ongoing on the reconstruction of Oron Maritime Terminal, with government ordering two passenger cruise ferries to ease water transportation between Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.
He said the Oron Maritime Terminal project comprises the Maritime Terminal, Shore Protection, Jetty, warehouse and cold room, as well as other recreational facilities, even as it is constructing access roads, such as Orukim Uyeghe Road and other facilities at the Ibom Deep Seaport to make the environment conducive for investors, adding that government was working tirelessly to woo investors to partner it in the great investment.
The governor made known that government has awarded contract for the construction of security fence and other infrastructural amenities at the Ibom Industrial Park which will provide work for thousands of youths and also drive entrepreneurial spirit in Akwa Ibom people.
He said, currently, government was in search of partners who will provide refilling depots for the CNG buses, adding that once this is achieved, it will launch the programme.
According to him, it does not make sense to buy CNG buses that will not have refilling depots, as doing so will defeat the purpose of the initiative, warning those selling petrol above the approved price to desist from such acts, as the government will not tolerate such unpatriotic actions.
He said government will soon set up a task force to ensure that those engaging in the practice are brought to book.
Eno urged Akwa Ibom people not to allow politics to divide them, or ethnicity to separate them but rather let their kindred spirit be an everlasting tie that binds and shapes their daily engagement with one another, as they celebrate 37 years of the State’s creation.
