In a bid to ensure a congenial learning environment for students in public secondary schools, the Akwa Ibom State Government has inaugurated a Committee to investigate conditions of boarding facilities in public secondary schools in the state.
Speaking at the inauguration of the committee which took place at the conference room of the Ministry of Education, the commissioner for education, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet, said the State governor, Pastor Umo Eno, was fully committed to the implementation of the free and compulsory education policy in the state, as well as the provision of conducive learning environment as enshrined in the ARISE Agenda of his administration.
Etiebet, who expressed confidence in the capacity of the committee to deliver on the assigned responsibility based on its composition which, she noted, was made up of people with integrity, disclosed, “the newly inaugurated committee, which has until December 20, 2024 to submit its report, is to conduct a thorough investigation into the condition of boarding facilities in public secondary schools across the state.”
She further stated that the task of the committee was to identify areas of concern, deficiencies, and potential risks to the health, safety and well-being of students.
Also speaking, the permanent secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Stella Etukakpan, lauded the dynamic leadership of Governor Umo Eno in ensuring the advancement of education in Akwa Ibom, and the swift response demonstrated by the commissioner for education, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet, in setting up the investigation committee.
In his acceptance speech, the chairman of the committee, Mr Ekanabasi Ubong, thanked Governor Eno for his unwavering commitment toward uplifting the standard of education in the state.
Ubong, however, pledged the determination of his committee members to present a comprehensive report to the state government at the end of their assignment.
The 15-member committee, which is headed by a retired permanent secretary in the state, Mr Ekanabasi Ubong, has the permanent secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs. Stella Etukakpan as secretary.
Also in the committee are, the permanent secretary, State Secondary Education Board (SSEB), Mr Okon Tom; permanent secretary, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mrs Roseline Mfon; permanent secretary, State Technical Schools Board, Dr Atim Okoko; senior special assistant to the governor on Research and Documentation, Dr Essien Ndueso; State president, All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Mr Steve Akpabio; Director of School Services, State Secondary Education Board (SSEB), Dr Elijah Maples; Chairman, National Parents Teachers Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN), Akwa Ibom chapter, Barr Clement Ebuk; Barr Henry Ekanem; Dr Ime Ataide; chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Akwa Ibom Wing, Comrade Edet Emenyi; Director, State Secondary and Higher Education, Dr Anietie Ikot; Mr Michael Udofia (Nutritionist), and Mr Udeme Udofia.
