As part of efforts towards enhancing safety for road users as well as boosting internally generated revenue (IGR), Akwa Ibom State Government (AKSG) has flagged off the construction of a 500-capacity Central Tipper and Truck Park in Uyo, the State capital.
The park, when completed, will curb road obstruction and incessant road accidents caused by indiscriminate parking of tippers and trucks along major roads in the State, especially near production factories and construction companies.
To prevent this malady, the State government, through the Ministry of Transport, flagged off the construction of a Central Tipper and Truck Park behind Champion Breweries along Aka-Nung Udoe Road.
Speaking at the flag off ceremony in Uyo, Tuesday, the commissioner for transport, Dr. Anthony Luke, said as a proactive governor, Pastor Umo Eno, Ph.D, is committed to the safety of lives particularly the road users and, therefore, was moved to undertake the project.
The state transport boss disclosed that apart from the Central Tipper and Truck Park, government is planning to construct another park at Ntak Inyang, Itam in Itu Local Government Area as well as in each of the senatorial districts of the State.
Represented by the permanent secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Grace Akpan, the commissioner emphasised that, in addition to enhancing safety of lives of commuters and road users, the tipper and truck park would create employment opportunities to the teeming youths of the state and also boost internally generated revenue, IGR.
He commended the Union of Tippers, Suppliers and Quarry Employers of Nigeria (UTSQEN) for partnering government towards the successful flag-off of the construction of the project and pledged government’s readiness to partner meaningful initiatives by transport unions towards the development of the sector as envisioned in the ARISE Agenda.
Earlier, the State chairman of UTSQEN, Comrade Edikan Iweh, had expressed deep appreciation to the Akwa Ibom governor, Pastor Umo Eno, Ph.D, for his lofty strides in the transport sector, adding that, the 500-capacity tipper and truck park would enhance the transport of solid minerals in the state, thus boosting the economic sector.
Iweh commended the commissioner for transport, Dr. Anthony Luke, for his sterling leadership qualities as portrayed in his commitment to the flag-off of the tipper and truck park project which had been abandoned for more than two decades.
In recognition of his commitment and contributions to the development of the park project, UTSQEN presented Dr. Anthony Luke with the Best Transport Commissioner Ever Award.
The event, which featured the hoisting of Nigeria, State and UTSQEN flags at the project site as a mark of authority and claim of the land, was attended by directors of the Ministry of Transport as well as critical stakeholders in the transport sector.
