ONNA

The AK-CARES has empowered members of two farmergroups in Onna Local Government Area with essential farm inputs for them to step up agricultural production for food to be sufficient in the state.

The benefiting groups were Nka Uwam Nkpaeto and Mboho Ima Farmers Community Association whose memberships are drawn from various communities in Onna Local Government Area of the state.

The state coordinator Result Area two, Mr Richard Sam, while presenting 50 broiler birds and eight bags of animal feed to each of the 20 beneficiaries from both farmer community associations, urged them to make optimal application of the farm inputs for the realisation of food sufficiency.

Sam, represented on the occasion by the head of Grievances Redress Mechanism, Mr Anameti Daniel, said the government’s gesture to the farmer groups was a demonstration of commitment to the growth and development of agriculture in Akwa Ibom.

He appreciated the World Bank, Federal and StateGovernments for the initiative aimed at increased food production, emphasising the need to show commitment in the development of agriculture since no one can survive without food.

The technical officer, Livestock Department in the state Ministry of Agriculture, Mr Jove Obot, was on hand for the enlightenment of the benefiting farmers on the techniques and management of poultry farm for profit making.

The chairman, Nka Uwam Nkpaeto Farmer group, Mr Donald Bob, thanked Governor Udom Emmanuel and the commissioner for agriculture, Dr Offiong Offor, for considering them in the agricultural empowerment scheme.

Bob noted with delight that the enlightenment programme on the techniques and management of poultry farm would help them in no small measures to attain greatness in poultry farming and promised that the objectives of the scheme would be realised.

On his part, the leader, Mboho Ima Farmers’ Community Association, Edina Inam, while responding, assured that the farm inputs given to members would encourage them to put in their best.

Inam recalled with satisfaction the receipt of goats, pigs and fingerlings from government for breeding by members, noting that the fertilizer and improved cassava cuttings that were given to them were judiciously used towards the realisation of government’s objectives.

He noted that the selection of the Association for the empowerment was an indication that was committed to thedevelopment and growth of the agricultural sector for the benefit of all and sundry in the country.

He pledged his members’ total commitment to ensure that the government’s good gesture are not misplaced since, according to him, a monitoring committee would be put in place to ensure that the farm inputs given to them are not misplaced or mismanaged.
