The Triennial Delegates Conference of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom State Council, has ended in Uyo with the election and swearing of a new State Working Committee (SWC) members to pilot the affairs of the Union in the State for the next three years.
The new executive has Comrade Nsibiet John, Publisher and Editor of The INK Newspaper, as Chairman; Margaret Moore as vice chairman; Nsikan Esenowo as Secretary; Uduak Akai as Assistant Secretary; Udeme Hosea as Treasurer, Kufre Emmanuel as Financial Secretary and Dianime Uko as Auditor.
Nsibiet John, who was elected during State Triennial Delegates Conference, which took place at the NUJ Press Centre, Information Drive, Uyo, succeeds Comrade Amos Etuk, whose tenure ended on August 2, 2025, after serving two consecutive terms.
At the end of voting, Nsibiet John, of the Federated Chapel, won overwhelmingly with 556 votes to defeat his closest opponent, Comrade Nene Affia of the State Information Chapel, who got 92 votes, while Comrade Esther Effiong and Comrade Edet Effiong Okon, both of the State Information Chapel, had four and 21 votes, respectively, and 17 votes were voided.
Announcing the results, the vice president of NUJ, South South Zone, Comrade Opaka Dokubo, urged the winners to be magnanimous in victory while the losers should have the spirit of sportsmanship, knowing in every contest there must be a winner.
John had previously served as Chairman of the Federated Chapel of the Union, earning the trust and support of many journalists within and outside the chapel.
In his acceptance speech, Comrade Nsibiet John, expressed deep appreciation to members of the union for the massive confidence reposed on him and promised to bring his experience to bear in strengthening the union and promoting unity, professionalism, and press freedom among journalists in the State.
