The Akwa Ibom deputy governor has restated the commitment of government to ensure the security of lives and property in the State.
Senator Akon Eyakenyi gave the assurance while receiving the State commandant, Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Bashar Hussaini, who paid her a courtesy visit at Government House, Uyo.
The deputy governor said the administration of Pastor Umo Eno was unreservedly committed to the well-being of security operatives serving in the State, saying that their contributions were crucial to the actualisation of the ARISE Agenda.
She tasked the NSCDC on continued synergy with sister security agencies, stressing that the task of effectively securing the State can only be done when such collaboration was in place.
“Security of lives and property remains a topmost priority in the ARISE Agenda because every other achievement depends on it. This is why this administration is giving it maximum attention.
“The governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, is also unreservedly committed to the welfare of security operatives in the State because each agency has a role to play towards the actualisation of the ARISE Agenda, particularly in the security sector. It will be difficult to succeed if you work at cross purposes,” she stressed.
Eyakenyi noted that Akwa Ibom government was determined to sustain its rating as one of the safest States in Nigeria, explaining that without a safe and peaceful environment there can be no development.
Describing the State as a destination which many people across the world visit for business, the deputy governor said keeping it safe was the only way to sustain the current robust traffic.
She urged security agencies to sustain their patrol of the maritime borders to prevent illegal entry into the State through those routes.
“Our maritime borders must continue to be within the watchful eyes of security agencies to ensure that whoever comes into the country through our State is duly authorised and doesn’t pose any threat to our individual or collective safety,” she emphasised.
She explained that the support extended to security agencies, and establishment of the Ministry of Internal Security and Waterways; establishment of Ibom Community Watch and other measures put in place by the state government, have combined to significantly improve on the security enjoyed in the State over the years.
Earlier, the State commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Mr. Hussaini, said he was in Government House to further create awareness on the mandate of his organisation and appreciate the state government for its support.
He said his men have been working in synergy with other security forces in the State in curbing crime, promising to sustain this spirit of collaboration.
The State commandant commended the present and past administrations for their efforts in ensuring that the NSCDC fulfilled its mandate and appealed for more support.
The event also featured the presentation of a souvenir to the deputy governor by the State commandant.
