Akwa Ibom government on Sunday held a Special Inter-Denominational Thanksgiving Service to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the state, and Nigeria’s 62nd Independence.

The Service themed: The Author and Finisher, was organised in conjunction with the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Akwa Ibom State Branch, at the Ibom Hall Grounds, IBB Way, Uyo.

Speaking, Gov Udom Emmanuel, who also took the first Bible reading from Hebrew 12 Vs 1 – 2, on behalf of Akwa Ibom people, expressed appreciation to God for sustaining the state through difficult times in the last 35 years.

“It has been 35 years since God granted our pleas and supplications. We have called this state a Land of Promise, and I think we have lived up to its name, and that is why we are standing here today to return thanks to God.”

According to the governor, “From a Spartan and dusty provincial Capital that Uyo was in Nigeria in 1987, it has today, become a sparkling destination of choice for Nigerians and other people across the world,” he stated.

Also, the special guest of honour, and former President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, remarked that it was satisfying to witness the tremendous transformations that the state has undergone in the last three and half decades.

Earlier in his sermon, the founder and senior pastor of the Eternity Network International, Abuja, Apostle Joshua Selman, admonished leaders to depend solely on the grace of the Almighty God as the author and finisher of their faith.

Drawing his homily from Psalm 103 Vs 1-5, in reference to the first reading, Selman said, until leaders at all levels learn to totally depend on divine direction, and refrain from trusting in human abilities, they may not be able to leave behind legacies through which they could be remembered for long after the end of their reign.

In his goodwill message, Bayelsa State governor, Senator Douye Diri, commended Gov Emmanuel for his accomplishments in the last seven years and a half, addingthat with the support of citizens and all stakeholders, the governor’s administration would end in a grand celebration.

The Thanksgiving Service had in attendance state governors, including Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, clergymen from different religious denominations, captains of industry, members of the political class, traditional rulers, and members of the diplomatic Corps.

The month-long anniversary celebration continued onMonday, with the inauguration of more live-touching projects in different parts of the state.
