2027: ORON PDP LEADERS BACK ETIM ISONG, REJECT ZONING CLAIM

The Peoples Democratic Party in Oron Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State has reaffirmed its support for the party’s senatorial candidate for the Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District, Prince Etim Isong, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party’s position was contained in a rejoinder dated September 27, 2026, issued in response to a statement purportedly signed by some individuals claiming to be stakeholders of the PDP in Oron Federal Constituency.

The PDP ward leadership in the constituency dismissed the opposing statement, insisting that Isong emerged as the party’s duly elected candidate through the prescribed party process.

The ward chairmen said they were particularly concerned by what they described as attempts to portray the senatorial contest as a dispute between Oron and other federal constituencies in the Eket Senatorial District.

According to the statement, “Prince Etim Isong, Zonal Publicity Secretary of the PDP, South-South Zone, remains our duly elected candidate for the Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District of our party come the 2027 general election.”The ward leaders further stated that Isong was not imposed on the party, claiming that statutory delegates, ward structures, and party leaders participated in the process that produced him.

They said, “No press conference in an event centre can upturn the will of the party.” The PDP leaders also rejected claims that there was an existing zoning document within the party guaranteeing the 2027 senatorial ticket to the Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency.

They challenged those making the claim to produce a signed document by the PDP in the Eket Senatorial District establishing such an arrangement.

The ward chairmen said the party’s position should instead be guided by unity, equity, and peaceful coexistence among the Eket, Oron, and Ikot Abasi Federal Constituencies.

They maintained that the alleged zoning controversy should not be allowed to create division among the three federal constituencies.

The statement read in part, “What our party preaches is unity, peace, love, and harmonious coexistence among the three Federal Constituencies of Eket Senatorial District—Eket, Oron, and Ikot Abasi.”The party leaders also described the reported opposition to Isong’s candidacy as the position of individuals rather than that of the entire PDP structure in Oron Federal Constituency.

They listed Oron, Okobo, Udung Uko, Urue Offong/Oruko, and Mbo as the local government areas within the federal constituency and said the ward structures in the areas had reaffirmed their support for the senatorial candidate.

The statement further described Isong as a son of Oro and a long-standing member of the PDP who had risen from the grassroots to the South-South zonal leadership of the party.

Isong currently serves as the PDP South-South Zonal Publicity Secretary. Recent reports have also identified him in that capacity in official South-South PDP activities.

The PDP ward leaders called on members of the party across the Eket Senatorial District to support Isong, while urging stakeholders to avoid actions capable of worsening internal disagreements ahead of the 2027 elections.

The latest development comes amid growing political activity in Akwa Ibom South ahead of the 2027 senatorial contest. Reports published in September identified Isong as the PDP candidate for the district.

The Oron PDP leaders concluded by declaring that the constituency would not reject one of its own, while urging party members to unite behind the candidate.

They said, “We stand for unity. We stand for peace. We reject discord.”
