Edo State governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has demonstrated his administration’s commitment to providing quality healthcare to all citizens by launching a free eye care outreach programme.
As part of the 2025 World Sight Day celebrations, over 100 Edo citizens and government workers benefited from free eye screening, corrective glasses, and medications.
The governor’s initiative is part of his ongoing healthcare reform agenda, aimed at expanding access to preventive and curative medical services for all Edo people.
The theme of the event, “Love Your Eyes: Vision for Everyone,” underscores the importance of eye care in maintaining overall health and productivity.
According to Dr. Precious Ogboru, the governor’s special adviser on Health Matters and Personal Physician, the outreach programme is a reflection of Okpebholo’s compassion and visionary approach to governance.
“His Excellency is deeply passionate about the health of Edo people,” Ogboru said, highlighting the governor’s efforts to transform the Government House Medical Centre into a model of modern primary healthcare.
Under Okpebholo’s leadership, the Government House Medical Centre has undergone significant transformation. The clinic, which previously managed about 50 patients per month, now attends to over 50 patients daily. The centre has been fully refurbished, expanded, and equipped with qualified medical personnel.
The free eye care outreach programme is part of the governor’s SHINE Agenda, which aims to promote preventive care and early detection of health conditions.
An ophthalmologist, Dr. Abraham Ohihoin, emphasised the importance of regular eye examinations in maintaining good eye health.
Ohihoin commended the Governor Okpebholo’s administration for deploying more eye specialists across Edo’s senatorial districts and upgrading hospitals with advanced ophthalmic equipment.
The governor’s initiative has been welcomed by citizens and government workers alike.
Pastor Edith Sede, permanent secretary, Government House and Protocol, praised the governor’s leadership, describing him as “a man who leads with both heart and vision.”
The free eye care outreach programme is a testament to Okpebholo’s commitment to the welfare of his people.
As the people of Edo celebrate this initiative, they are reminded of the importance of protecting their eyesight. With the Governor’s investment in eye health, citizens can look forward to a brighter future, free from the burden of preventable blindness.
“Governor Okpebholo’s investment in eye health is not just about treating ailments; it’s about preserving the productivity and potential of Edo people,” Dr. Ohihoin noted.
